March 7

I'm thinking about blogs. As you know I have two, this little daily diary and then a once a week writers blog that offers craft topics and book reviews. I am unable to get to visit my friends' blog as much as I would like these days- what with writing, revising and Master's work-plus, well, life. It makes me wonder what the value is in blogs. Some peoples' blogs really take off. Some people gain fans with their blogs and always seem to have something witty and viral worthy to say-what I mean by viral is people will talk about it- tweet it- facebook it, etc. I wish I were one of those people. I think it can really move your career along. Sort of like a nationally syndicated columnist. People go everyday to read your words and talk about them. So there is no denying that blogs work, but the question is, do they work for everyone?
Do you feel your blog is working for you? What sort of information gets the most reaction? What are your favorite blogs to visit?

  1. Good questions - I just wish I knew the answers! Problem is, you're supposed to write amazing posts AND put them up frequently. Then you either hope people find your little blog in a sea of thousands and thousands, or you have to actually market it, which takes time. Sometimes it does seem pointless. But then, I've made several really good friends through blogging, something that's especially important since none of my IRL friends are writers. So in that way, blogging has definitely been worth it.

  2. I don't expect fame or fortune from my blog. (Maybe because i am only semi-witty and semi-consistent) But It's sort of fun anyway, isn't it? I really enjoy the networking aspect. I don't have a gazillion followers but I appreciate getting to know the ones I do have.

  3. Actually Nancy, your blog is one of the few I still read as often as I can. I really think you do not give yourself enough credit for a job well done. Heck woman - you even gained me as a fan. :)

  4. Nancy: Do you enjoy blogging? What did you hope to get out of it?

  5. I have no idea if my blog is working for me. I get daily hits so someone must be reading it. But the only people that comment are people whose blogs I comment on first. For some reason, I don't feel like I can afford to just stop writing a blog altogether though.

  6. Hi Caryn, I agree. Since I've been blogging, I've made some really wonderful on-line friends. I mean, look at at the replies here. I wouldn't give them up for the world.
Hi Perry, I agree. It's why I keep this daily blog. For the networking it affords me. I enjoy the friendships-even if I never go viral.
    Hi Marty, *blush* thanks!!
Hi THW - very good question. Yes, I do enjoy blogging. I am verbose. Ask anyone who's met me in person. It's hard to get me to quit talking. Perhaps because I work alone and spend many hours alone. Besides, being able to talk, what I like about blogging are the people I communicate with- like you all. But not every post creates communication and I begin to doubt...think perhaps I have become a bore.
Hi Linda, I agree. Doesn't it feel sometimes as if you are shouting out into the great silence of space wondering if anyone is out there?
(btw- I love your Friday Forwards.)
Thanks for the comments everyone! You all make my day! Cheers~

  7. You are not a bore. As for every blog not creating communication - that's the nature of blogging. I read a bunch of blogs and I don't always comment. I don't expect others to, either. And, some days I don't even come online.

I think some bloggers come to blogging with expectations, rather than just having fun with it.

I say, have fun. Write about something fun to you. Post a picture of something you enjoy. Show me a picture of your favorite slippers, a tree you love or tell me about the latest movie you enjoy or didn't enjoy.

    Just have some fun.

  9. I hesitate to say this because I don't know you that well. But since you've been thinking about drawing more conversation to your blog, I have to say, that a good post title goes a long way to draw an audience.

    Makes a huge difference.

Now ... time for some housework. Hope your floors are going well and that you're having a good day. Happy Writing and remember, you are NOT boring.
